Special Weather Alert: A vigorous tropical wave is approaching the Eastern Caribbean and should result in increased cloudiness across St.Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) tonight with scattered showers. Although some degeneration has occurred within the tropical wave structure, interaction with the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) could cause moderate to heavy showers, periods of rain, thunderstorms and occasional gusty winds, peaking Thursday afternoon into the night.

Based on model indications, rainfall accumulations in excess of 75mm (3 inches) can be expected into the night with higher amounts in mountainous areas…. Residents and motorists should be alert and exercise caution in areas prone to flooding and thunderstorm activity/lightning strikes. Instability could linger into Friday, but cloudiness and shower activity should be reduced by afternoon.

Moderate to fresh (20 - 40 km/h) north-east trades are across the islands, but a wind surge associated with the approaching tropical wave could have gusty winds (up to 55km/h) near showers during Thursday. Directions may veer to south-easterly late Thursday as the axis crosses the islands. Occasional reduction to light (under 15km/h) and variable winds is possible early Friday, before moderate to fresh breeze returns.

Slight to moderate sea conditions with easterly swells ranging 1.0 m – 2.0 m across our islands. Wave heights should be increasing with moderate sea conditions late Thursday (range 1.2 – 1.8m on west coasts and 1.8 – 2.5 m on east coasts) and expected to retreat during Saturday. The haze has thinned out with the approach of the vigorous tropical wave, but should be increasing again late Friday.
