A tropical wave ahead of tropical storm Beryl will be affecting the islands this afternoon into tonight. Most of the instability will be over the extreme southern islands. Nevertheless, some cloudy conditions across SVG may be experienced during the evening into tonight.
At 11 am, Beryl was weakened to a tropical storm and was located near latitude 12.1 North, longitude 51.1 West, or approximately 682 miles east of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG). Beryl is forecast to move west north-west near 14 mph (22 km/h) towards the northern portion of the Lesser Antilles; Tropical Storm Warning (Dominica) and Watches are in place for some of those islands. Maximum sustained winds are near 65 mph with higher gust. Tropical storm-force winds (39 to 73 mph) extend outward up to 35 miles (55km).
As Beryl inches closer to the Lesser Antilles, one will observe changes in the sky, wind and sea conditions across SVG. There will be an increase in cloudy conditions as the day progresses on Sunday. Outer bands will first affect Barbados around Sunday afternoon, and as Beryl continues to move west north –west, these outer bands may then begin to affect Saint Vincent and the Grenadines some time later during the day. Model guidance is indicating most of the instability Sunday evening into early Monday morning, with an accumulation of approximately 20mm (less than an inch) by Monday night. On Tuesday, the ridge of high pressure should regain full dominance.
A significant decrease in wind speeds will be noticeable. From Sunday afternoon winds should be averaging between 9km/h to 25km/h. South-east to North-easterly is forecast from Sunday afternoon, becoming south westerly on Monday. Seas should decrease to 1.2m on the west coast but increase to 3.0m on the east coast from tomorrow.
The Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Meteorological Service will continue to monitor the progress of this storm and provide the next update at 6 pm, Saturday 7th July 2018.
